Deceased Name: SERVICES SET FOR PHILLIP KARON , 69, FRESNO VETERANS' ACTIVIST Services for Phillip Karon, 69, of Fresno, a retired
salesman and longtime activist for veterans' causes, will be 1 p.m. Monday at
the John N. Lisle Chapel of the Lisle Funeral Home. Mr. Karon died Thursday.
Born in Chicago in 1919, Mr. Karon came to Fresno in 1941 just before the
start of World War II with the Army Air Corps. He was stationed at Hammar
Field where he played drums in an air corps band known as the Bombasies. The
group, a swing band, played at Hammar Field and numerous USO gatherings
during the early war years. He was later transferred to a military post near
Lompoc, but returned to Fresno after the war and worked for Norman Rudy's
variety stores. He eventually became manager of Rudy's store at Olive and
Blackstone avenues. He left the variety store to become a partner in the
General Merchandising Corp., based in Los Angeles, in the early 1950s. He later was sales manager for Fink & Scopp Home
Furnishings in Fresno through the 1960s. He retired in 1972. Mr. Karon was a reserve deputy for the Fresno County
Sheriff's Department from the early 1960s through the 1970s. Mr. Karon also
devoted much of his time to the Disabled American Veterans. Both Mr. Karon and his wife worked closely with former
Congressman B.F. Sisk, and later with Congressman Tony Coehlo, on DAV
advisory committees. He was also a member of the DAV's State Legislative
Committee. He was a past president of the Greater Fresno Chapter 137
DAV and also a past commander of the California DAV. He was a member of the VFW Ship No. 9814, Masonic Lodge
No. 247, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Musicians Local No. 210. He is survived by his wife, Frances Ruth; a daughter,
Doris Lynn Bachman of Irvine; and two grandchildren. The family requests rememberances be sent to the charity
